Inspired by Scrim: The Story Behind the Jester Pup Charm

A Charm Inspired by Joy, Loyalty, and Scrim the Pup

From the jester mask and collar to the dangling bone detail, the Jester Pup Couture Charm was designed to capture the magic and mischief of Mardi Gras, paired with the warmth and loyalty we associate with our beloved pets. The puppy’s face, full of character and curiosity, was inspired by a real dog named Scrim — a cherished pup who made headlines across New Orleans and beyond.

Scrim was rescued during Hurricane Ida, after surviving a traumatic experience in the floodwaters of southern Louisiana. His unique face and soulful expression made an immediate impression — not just on our hearts, but in the media as well. He quickly became a symbol of hope, resilience, and second chances.

His story was shared across local news and even drew attention online, where thousands followed his journey to recovery. To learn more about Scrim and how he became a local icon, you can watch this video documenting his story:

When we began sculpting the Jester Pup, it felt only natural to use Scrim’s sweet and expressive face as our muse — a tribute not only to one dog’s survival, but to the spirit of all dogs who bring joy, comfort, and loyalty into our lives.

Why We Created the Jester Pup

In 2023, we launched a sponsorship initiative inviting members of our Cali Krewe to help bring new designs to life. The Jester Pup was originally part of our internal "wish list" of charms we hoped to create, and thanks to the support of our sponsor, it found its way into the collection.

Designed to reflect the playfulness of Mardi Gras and the deep bond we share with our pets, this charm brings together celebration and symbolism in a powerful way.

The Sponsor’s Story: Honoring a Son, a City, and a Life of Purpose

This charm was generously sponsored by Barbara Towbin, a longtime Cali Krewe member who dedicated the design to her son, Andy.

Andy moved to New Orleans in 2001 to attend Tulane University, where he earned degrees in History, Latin American Studies, and Architectural Preservation. Though displaced by Hurricane Katrina, he returned to New Orleans shortly after and has called the city home ever since. A passionate dog lover with two pups of his own, Andy’s story is deeply intertwined with the city’s cultural fabric.

Barbara shared that she refers to the charm as “Jesse the Jazzy Jester Pup,” and chose the name Jester Pup from the list of suggested titles.

“For 15 years straight, we had a huge Mardi Gras party at our home in Memphis, sometimes with 100 or more guests,” Barbara shared. “Jester Pup reminds me of the great times had in New Orleans, especially during Mardi Gras. I’ve always had dogs and will continue to as long as I am able.”

Supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

As with all sponsored charms, a portion of proceeds from the Jester Pup Couture Charm will be donated to a nonprofit chosen by the sponsor. Barbara selected St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital — a place close to her heart.

Her grandson was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of two and a half. Though he received care in Dallas, the treatment protocol that saved his life was developed by St. Jude. Today, he is a thriving 14-year-old who plays sports and lives life to the fullest.

“The survival rate when the hospital was built was just 20 percent. Now it’s 82 percent. We are extremely lucky that our story had a happy outcome,” Barbara said.

The Jester Pup Couture Charm is lighthearted in appearance but carries a profound emotional depth. It honors personal stories of survival and joy, the unconditional love of dogs, and the enduring traditions of New Orleans. From Scrim’s unforgettable face to Andy’s unwavering love for the Crescent City, and Barbara’s beautiful dedication — this charm is a symbol of what it means to love, celebrate, and remember.

We are honored to include Jester Pup in the Cristy Cali collection and forever grateful to Barbara Towbin for sponsoring this meaningful design.
